Club Forum October 6 2017 - Community Service
Date: August 22, 2014

To: Clay Samis, Secretary, Brighton Rotary Club

From: Bruce Davis

SUBJECT: SERVICE REVIEW

I was recently requested by President Mark Walas to facilitate a “strategic planning” exercise for the Brighton Rotary Club. I was very happy to take this on.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMENTS FROM 2014
•“I would like to see two more projects in the winter months ( although the exodus of snowbirds may restrict this from happening)”
•“We give away money too easily; we need to be more selective about who/what we help”
•“I would like to see us be more proactive in selecting our community “areas of focus”, rather than just responding to requests for funds”
•“We need to aim for specific goals with measurable results”
•“We don’t have any project that is 100% from the Brighton Club for the Brighton Community, a project that identifies Brighton Rotary”
•BUT…….. “ We tend to stay too confined to Brighton”
•“We should be charging a fee for each request for our BBQ services”
•BUT…….. “we are BBQing too much”
•“We should make sure that we get good PR for what we do”
•“we need to be consistent and transparent in the way we disburse our donations.”
•“Partnerships leverage strength”  ( from Brighton Rotary website ).  “I applaud the initiative to work with Lions and other local service groups”.
•“I would like to see us do more for disadvantaged youth in our community”.

During discussion today October 6th,
Reviewed monies spent so far this year on Community Service.
Members were encouraged to provide input on where money goes.

Rotary Core Areas of Focus
1.Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution
2.Disease Prevention and Treatment
3.Water and Sanitation
4.Maternal and Child Health
5.Basic Education and Literacy
6.Economic and Community Development

Some discussion about Rotary awareness in our Community.
R Clay noted Rotary has no 'National' service.
Some discussion about new fund raising ideas would be welcome.

From outbound exchange student Abigail McDougal in France:
"My month in France so far has been awesome. I tried escargot today, and to my delight I loved it: I've been eating a lot, and school is long and tedious but it helps me learn. I'm not allowed to go out much because my family is busy, I haven't connected with them as well as I'd like and I'm trying really hard. My french has improved so much since my arrival. This weekend is a multi district trip to mont Saint Michelle so I'm sure to COVER my blazer with pins. My town is the perfect size for me and I adore my counsellor and rotary club. My family doesn't really do anything with me and I've gotta say that I haven't gotten homesick because of the lack of interaction ( they never start the conversation and it's tough to keep it going ), but I'm not gonna quit .
Bon soirée !"
