Anishnaabe Kwewag Gamig Alderville's Women's Shelter
Dec. 15, 2021 7:00 a.m.
The shelter offers temporary emergency shelter for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous women and their children experiencing family violence and upheaval. They advocate on behalf of the sheltered, offer referrals, accompany them at court appointments, offer a Confidential Crisis Intervention program, transportation to appointments, and offer children's and women's in-house on-site support programs. They also assist women with legal, financial, housing and medical resources. A blend of Aborioginal traditional healing techniques are used in addition to conventional approaches. The shelter just recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. I attended the traditional celebrations and was so impressed by the love and obvious care everyone carried for the shelter. The Alderville Shelter is one of seven under the Anishnaabe Kwewag Gamig Inc. umbrella, which includes the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, Mississaugas of Scugog First Nation, Rama First Nation, Moose Deer Point First Nation, Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and Beausoleil First Nation. |
