  2. R Clay is circulating sign up sheet for the Street Dance July 29.
  3. Letter from Loyalist College regarding Rotary bursary update and thanks.
  4. Wild Fires in BC - Rotary is not a first response organization, we support shelter boxes in many countries but Rotary typically supports long term recovery efforts. In immediate needs, recommended to support Red Cross or Disaster Aide Canada. Local Rotary Clubs in BC will be setting up local centrally administered fund for Rotary for long term recovery efforts once needs are known. More to come.
  5. 2018 RI Convention in Toronto - Host Committee are looking for people with Marketing and Communication skills to help promote the event.
  6. At last Board meeting, it was made known that John Smiley is selling his food trailer. Past Rotarian Jeff Brace advised that John will sell the trailer for about $24,000 or alternatively, for $12,000 with other half for a tax receipt. Brighton Rotary cannot give tax receipts so that option is not available.
  7. At RI convention in Atlanta June 12th, Rotary President John Germ and Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced a further commitment of $450,000 to support the eradication of Polio. This extends the long standing partnership between Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to ending polio, a paralyzing, life altering  scourge on the verge of becoming the second human disease ever to be eliminated. Rotary is committing to raise $50,000 annually over the next 3 years, to be matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With our partners this allows the immunization of 450 million children every year and the rigorous disease surveillance in both endemic and at-risk polio-free countries. Rotary with matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated more than $1,6 billion to polio eradication since 1985. Pres Steve would like the club to consider providing our speakers with a gift in their name to Polio Eradication rather than the Hosleton apple.
  8. Brighton Rotary Board meeting scheduled for Monday July 17 - several board members are not available. Will look to move to the following week.
  9. NO MEETING NEXT FRIDAY -  anticipate social at Barcoven on Wednesday. Details to come.
  10. Alex's last meeting with us - we signed a Canadian Flag and gave it to Alex as a parting reminder with well wishes for his future.
Stories
Stephanie Shakura's year in Germany
R Ricardo introduced Stephanie - one of our returned outbound exchange students.
Stephanie returned home two weeks ago. She loved her year in Germany with her favourite part the old buildings, also the train system. She was surprised at how much the German's like their sausage, many varieties. The German's are very practical, they do everything a certain way.

She had two host families. School was hard and the students were very serious, they study hard and their is no extra curricular activities. The German's speak very good english.

In October she went on her first tour of Germany. She met many exchange students and these became very good friends.

She had some home sickness at Christmas. Her host mom had a small tree and they celebrate on Christmas eve, Christmas day was a let down, everything done the day before.

In February she went on a ski trip to Austria and became a big fan. In April she took a three week tour of Europe. She loved Italy. She was able to visit her parents who came to Amserterdam for a visit.

Alex offered a few memories of his East Coast Trip - They visited Toronto, Niagara, Ottawa on Canada Day and endured 4 hour wait in line, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, Charlettetown. He loved PEI and the seafood. They saw Halifax andPeggy's Cove. Two weeks went by fast, like 3 days it felt like. There were about 50 students on the trip. He has really enjoyed his year in Canada, all good, no bad times, no home sickness, the best year of his life.
