Audrey's Experience Teaching at Sachigo Lake First Nation
R Murray introduced Audrey. He was quite pleased that Audrey is a Queen's grad and elementary teacher.

Biography for Audrey Koerber:
  • Graduated in Geotechnical Engineering from Queen’s University;
  • Worked as an engineer for three years in Canada, Finland and the Republic of South Africa;
  • Raised two daughters and a son as a stay-at-home mother;
  • Worked as a Montessori teacher before graduating from Queen’s with a Teaching degree;
  • Worked as an elementary teacher for 17 years - including three years in a Northern FN fly-in community in Ontario and most recently as a Special Education Teacher in British Columbia, and finally
  • She returned to Brighton to be closer to family and now works with Greer Galloway as an Engineer-In-Training.

Audrey's presentation photos are provided as link to this service wheel.

Teaching in north was something Audrey wanted to do and when Michael headed to China, and the kids left too, Audrey went north to teach for 3 winters at Sachigo Lake First Nation. A community about 500km north of Sault Lookout. 13 to 15 hours driving on winter roads.

It is a small community, about 600 people. Culture very Christian and First Nation. They don't worry about seat belts in vehicles. No drumming is allowed. They have Christian gospel singing. Very strict community, she had a couple students, good students who's mother was excommunicated from Community and son is now struggling. Daughter doing better and Audrey hopes to host her.

Many who went through Residential schools didn't learn much, they can't write. Audrey helped an elder get Master's degree from Western University. Smart person but couldn't write.

Laughter is a huge part of the community. In spite of their difficulties.

Kids have to go to Thunder Bay for high school where they experience a lot of racism. Have to leave community after elementary school. In community a lot of place based learning such as language, hunt and fishing. When ice fishing everyone very quiet.

Not much in the community, the Northern Store, band office and school. Not many opportunities. No work.

A lot of lateral violence.

A lot of power outages. Audrey once tried to have kids raise chickens but eventually died from cold. A lot of boil water orders, sometimes lasting a month. Food is expensive even when subsidized and lack of options.

Dogs run free and once in a while they have a culling.

Winter the days are short.

The have a breakfast and lunch program at the school.

They have a wonderful culture worth saving, and intelligent people, but life is hard. We could learn from them.
