Rotary Minute

From RI President Holger Knaack

Holger says that  in every community, people have been left out, and we have not made a strong enough effort to reach them. He talks about the RI Board of Directors forming a task force to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion to help clubs attract new members regardless of gender, race, religion, age, or other factors which will help us speed up the change we all want and need. He says, "It's important that we make sure every new Rotary member is a good fit for their club. Rotary Opens Opportunities through diversity."

TED - Why Great Leaders Make You Feel Safe
Today's presentation was a TED talk by Simon Sinek, 'Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe'.

Simon started with a story of a military Captain who in the face of danger recovered wounded soldiers. At one time giving a kiss to a soldier he placed in the helicopter before going back out to bring back another wounded soldier.

When asked why, he said they would have done it for him.

In the military, they give medals to soldiers who those who risk themselves.

In business, they give bonuses to those who risk others.for their own improvement.

Simon examined the environment that creates heroes. Those groups trust one another, they cooperate for greater goal / good. They develop a feeling that can't be told what needs to be done.

In the ages, we lived in a dangerous environment and had to rely on one another to survive. We were stronger when we stayed together. Our social structure helped us stay alive, to grow and develop. We learned to trust one another.

Today, life is still with its dangers and risks, but those dangers are different.

In the organizations and businesses where we live, there is an environment. Do you feel safe in that environment?

A good leader sets the atmosphere, whether one of security and safety or one of fear. Due the employees trust the leader? Those who feel safe and secure, will work harder.

Many CEO's will sacrifice the work force to cut the bottom line, to protect their position. Great leaders never sacrifice the people for numbers. Leadership is a choice.
