DG Iosif’s weekly report:

Special Story from Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise.
John Stevens from the Markham Sunrise Rotary club joined with Tracey Burton and Tammy Isa of the Canadians Care Collective (a team of Canadian Volunteers) and other partners to deliver urgently needed  medications and medical supplies to Ukrainian hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices and directly to the front lines. John and the club initially raised  around $83,000 through the CanadaHelps online platform and another $42,000 via other means for a total of about $125,000 cash raised – in addition to the $100 million of in-kind donations.
Results To Date:
We just received approximately $100 million (retail value) of drugs donated by various pharmaceutical companies (see below) and we are raising funds to pay for audits and shipping:
  • Apotex- generously donated 77 pallets of dexamethazone (used to treat inflamation/pain)
  • Weber Naturals- generously donated 30 pallets of Vitamin C  tablets (enough vitamins for a 30 day supply for 200,000 soldiers)
  • PharmaScience - generously donated 14 pallets of various emergency meds
  • Viatris- generously donated 2 pallets of Synthroid
  • This is in addition to the following supplies already delivered:
  • Hikma Pharmaceuticals  generously donated 80 pallets of anesthesiology drugs worth $2.6 million
  • ICP Canada Inc. generously donated $76,000 of re-usable surgical gowns
Feb 14 2023 - A Valentine's Day Gift - HPIC Offices - Preparing to Ship The Dexamethazone and Vitamins to Ukraine
John and the club raised  around $83,000 through the CanadaHelps online platform and another $42,000 via other means for a total of about $125,000 cash raised – in addition to the $100 million of in-kind donations. When they first started, they planned to use the money to buy medical supplies but  realized that they could make much more difference by getting Pharma companies to donate supplies and we would use the funds raised to pay for audit and shipping.
John put together a info graphic that describes the initiative:

This is an inspirational story that speaks to the creativity, energy and resolve to help the people of Ukraine in their time of need. This speaks to the ability of Rotarians to leverage our relationships with community partners to make a difference. Congratulations to John Stevens from Markham Sunrise, the members of the Markham Sunrise Club, the Canadian Care Collective and the other partners named above to make this happen. Kudos!
Tomorrow morning, please tune into Breakfast Television for a chance to see Jim Snadiford and Carolyn Nemeth members of Markham Sunrise representing Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise on Breakfast Television, in regard to the Millions of Dollars of Meds and Vitamins they are sending to the Ukraine.

Stories
Rotary's Ongoing Commitment - Polio Plus
Tomorrow - Feb 23 is the 118th anniversary of Rotary.

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.
Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world.
Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.
Our ongoing commitment
That commitment endures today through an organization that remains truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Our members now span the globe, working to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.
We’re not afraid to dream big and set bold goals. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. Today, polio remains endemic in only two countries — down from 125 in 1988.
The roots of Rotary’s polio eradication efforts
On 29 September 1979, volunteers administered drops of oral polio vaccine to children at a health center in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, Philippines. The event in metropolitan Manila was arranged and attended by Rotarians and delegates from the Philippine Ministry of Health.
When James L. Bomar Jr., then RI president, put the first drops of vaccine into a child’s mouth, he ceremonially launched the Philippine poliomyelitis immunization effort. Rotary’s first Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grant project was underway.
Bomar and Enrique M. Garcia, the country’s minister of health, had earlier signed an agreement committing Rotary International and the government of the Philippines to a joint multiyear effort to immunize about 6 million children against polio, at a cost of about $760,000.
In a 1993 interview, Bomar reminisced about the trip. He recalled how the brother of one of the children he had immunized tugged on his pant leg to get his attention and said, “Thank you, thank you, Rotary.”
The project’s success led Rotary to make polio eradication a top priority. Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.
