Brighton Rotary News Dec 6 2023
-
2023
Today's meeting was focused as a reminder of the horrible disease that Polio is. That if we don't continue to raise money to vaccinate hundreds of thousands of children each year to eradicate this disease, it will come back.

But first, local news and updates for the Rotary Club of Brighton.

Members: 10

Guests: Exchange student Gabriel from Brazil and Terri Lynn Jenkins

Correspondence:

1. DG John Burns weekly news letter. See attached.

Smile: blush

A Priest, a minister and a Rabbi want to see who's best at his job. So they each go into the woods, find a bear and attempt to convert it. Later they get together. The priest begins, "when I found the bear, I read to him from the catechism and sprinkled him with holy water. Next week is his first communion."
"I found a bear in the stream," says the minister, "and preached God's Holy word. The bear was so mesmerized that he let me baptize him."
They both looked at the rabbi, who is lying on a gurney in a body cast. "Looking back," he says, "maybe I shouldn't have started with the circumcision."

Rotary Minute:

Rotarians in District 7070 have been committed over the past nearly 40 years to raising funds to immunize children worldwide and our efforts are paying off.  You should be proud of the difference that Rotary has made in the lives of millions of children by eliminating this dreadful disease.
I want to thank you for your past efforts and ask that you recommit to helping us raise funds to finish Rotary’s number one initiative of eradicating polio.  Rotary is still committed to raising $50 million a year for this effort.
As such, we are launching the District 7070 Polio Plus Society and are inviting you to join our efforts to continue to raise funds to eradicate polio.  To become a member of the District 7070 Polio Plus Society you are asked to commit to making an annual donation of $100 USD or more to The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus Fund until the last two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, are certified free of the wild polio virus.

Polio Eradication Update and Reminder
Today we focused on Rotary's effort to eradicate Polio. Rotary's Polio Plus Campaign.

District Governor John has one of his goals this year that every Rotarian in our District contribute at least $10 to the Polio Plus program. Rotary International's challenge is to raise $50,000,000 each year to vaccinate children around the world. This will be match 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation turning our $10 to $30 or $50,000,000 to $150,000,000.

You too can contribute!

R Steve upped each Brighton Rotarian's contribution from $10 to $20 as the ask. Thanks to all who have contributed. Those not present he will be visiting.

The Disease

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.

Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide.

A short Youtube video was shared with the Club, see link here:

Rotary's journey to eliminate Polio started in 1979 in the Philippines to vaccinate 6 million children in a multi year plan.

In 1985, Rotary International launched PolioPlus, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative, with an initial fundraising target of US$120 million.

Rotary International and the World Health Organization launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. There are an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries.

It costs $3 to fully vaccinate a child and we have vaccinated 3 billion children since the beginning of the Polio Plus campaign.

In 2023, there are 11 reported cases from the wild polio virus. 6 in Afghanistan and 5 in Pakistan. We are still vaccinating hundreds of thousands of children each year.

There were many technical questions we don't have the answer to. But we know we need money to continue and complete to save lives and the well being of children around the world.
