R Steve upped each Brighton Rotarian's contribution from $10 to $20 as the ask. Thanks to all who have contributed. Those not present he will be visiting. The DiseasePoliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. A short Youtube video was shared with the Club, see link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gplA6pq9cOs Rotary's journey to eliminate Polio started in 1979 in the Philippines to vaccinate 6 million children in a multi year plan. In 1985, Rotary International launched PolioPlus, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative, with an initial fundraising target of US$120 million. Rotary International and the World Health Organization launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. There are an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. It costs $3 to fully vaccinate a child and we have vaccinated 3 billion children since the beginning of the Polio Plus campaign. In 2023, there are 11 reported cases from the wild polio virus. 6 in Afghanistan and 5 in Pakistan. We are still vaccinating hundreds of thousands of children each year. There were many technical questions we don't have the answer to. But we know we need money to continue and complete to save lives and the well being of children around the world.
