Southwell, Grant Edward - July 16, 1943 - May 17, 2023 In his 80th year, Grant peacefully passed away with his family by his side after his yearlong battle with cancer. Beloved husband and best friend of B.Diane Southwell (Dec 2017) for 50 years. Loving father of Andrew (Holly) Southwell, Shannon Southwell, and Meghan (Adam) Groves. Proud grandfather of Meredith, Evan, Madeline, Aaron, Marshall and Hunter. Grant will be greatly missed by his siblings Dale (Carole) Southwell, Mary (Brian) O’Neil, his sister-in-law Jean Wickett, along with many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Grant predominantly spent his career in municipal government for The Township of Michipicoten in Wawa, ON. He was a long time Rotarian member belonging to the Oshawa, Wawa and Trenton Rotary Clubs. The ‘Service Above Self’ motto was apparent through his many hours of volunteering with Rotary through a variety of programs and initiatives. Grant and Diane loved to travel and attended many Rotary International events and hosted numerous exchange students over the years. Grant lived his life with integrity and resilience and will be dearly missed. The family sends their greatest thanks to Dr. Brooke Wilson and the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre, the Rotary Club of Trenton, the staff at Quinte Health Care (Trenton) and Hospice Quinte for their compassion and support during Grant’s illness. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation at the Weaver Life Centre, 29 Bay Street, Trenton on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 5-8 pm. Funeral Ceremony in memory of Grant will be held at Heroes Landing, 57 Stella Cres., Trenton on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 2 pm with reception to immediately follow. Interment will take place at a later date at Mount Lawn Cemetery, Whitby. Donations to the Rotary Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or to Hospice Quinte would be greatly appreciated. SMILE ?

We sometimes think that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. In reality the poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty of all.  -  Mother Theresa

From R Steve - 3 ducks in a bar. 1st duck is Huey and he says he is great when asked by the bar tender. The second duck is Duey and he is also wonderful when asked. the third duck is Puddles and ?? (sorry can't read my scratches).

R Clay shared a longer smile about a guy who gets stranded on a deserted island for years with nothing but coconuts and bananas. One day a beautiful women rows up to his beach and he finds out she has been stranded on the other side of the island. However, she has fashioned tools to make the row boat, as well as a home and necessities as well as extra things when she takes him back to her side of the island. The man is astounded that she was so resourceful and made everything from the raw materials on the island. She wants to get comfortable and asks him if he wants to 'play a round'. He can't believe his luck and asked her if she has also made a golf course.

Stories
Michael Koerber's Classification part 2b
R Michael agreed to come back and explain how Gold in made.

Michael showed us again the gold mine in Alaska, built in a Nature Reserve. All underground.

He explained that mining today is much cleaner and environmental friendlier than at times past. Also a lot safer, at least in developing countries.

Compressed air is  used for a lot of the equipment.
Rock bolts used to secure the back, keep rock from falling and caving in. In high traffic areas they also use wire mesh and shotcrete.

At deep depths, rock behaves differently than at surface. Under a lot of pressure and rocks can burst, shoot out of wall.

Michael gave a brief explanation between gold and fools gold. Often found in same area.

Gold very heavy with density of 19.32. Platinum also heavy. Most other minerals much lighter.

He explained 'intrusions' in the ground. An example was in Cobalt with silver.

They have to mine the rock and then crush it to start process to separate gold from the other rock. They use hardened steel to crush rock. This is done in stages, to get the rock to smaller pieces. Then they add lime to raise pH and then cyanide added. They have to keep pH high like about 12. In acid conditions cyanide in unstable and goes to gas and very dangerous. They add oxygen. All this to dissolve the gold and create a mud slurry. Carbon from roasted coconut shells is added as the carbon bonds with gold and process used to remove the gold from the slurry.

Then they strip gold from the carbon using steel wool and a lot of heat. A good operator keeps skimming off froth off top of molten rock, that is the impurities. Good operator can tell by the colour the quality of gold.

When right, the bars of gold are created. These bars are sampled and tested for purity. The refined gold about 99.9% gold.

Pure gold too soft to make products with.
14 karat gold about 58% gold
12 karat about 50% gold

24 karat almost pure.

Silver, copper and platinum used to mix with gold.
