From DG Mark Chipman:

November is Rotary Foundation Month!!!!

The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary. Founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects around the world related to Rotary’s seven areas of focus: peacebuilding and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and most recently environmental sustainability.

District 7070 benefits each year from money given back to us from the Foundation in the form of District and Global grants.  A recent example is the District $1,000 COVID matching grants.   Over 35 Clubs within our District applied for the grant and will soon be receiving cheques to help with the purchase of PPE, foodbanks, masks and food vouchers.  Numerous other clubs in the District will be receiving grant money for other initiatives around the world including the purchase of water filters and supplies, hospital equipment, and educational training programs.

TEDx The Power of Human Nature
Today's presentation was a TED talk:

The Power of Human Nature presented by Jeff Conillard.

He asked initially, What is Addiction?

He proposed that addiction is a solution. He provided some history of human evolution, from early days when stress was caused by wild animals in the forest and our 'fight or flight' response would kick in. Today, many of us live with almost constant stress (worried about debt or other things)(cronnic stress).

He went through some of the changes in attitude and assessment of addiction. From a failure of individual to pick themselves up to classified as disease.

Jeff suggested it may be a glitch in our human operating system. We seek ways to relieve stress in our lives and to seek Eustress. Sometimes, our response to stress can become excessive, habitual, a problem.

In his experience we need human connection to help deal with stress and choice better solutions. We need to trade our cages for open spaces.
