R Steve introduced Danny Broome from the Salvation Army in Cobourg. Danny is also a relatively new Rotarian with the Cobourg Rotary Club.

Major Dan Broome was born and raised in Ontario and spent his younger years in Toronto, but high school years were spent in Belleville. He started attending the Salvation Army when he was 18 years old which led to his calling to become a Salvation Army officer,  which means he is an ordained minister. In 2020 he celebrated 30 years as an Officer. He has served in Salvation Army Churches in Paris, Brampton, Milton, Oakville, St. George's Bermuda, Moose Jaw Saskatchewan and currently in Cobourg.  He also served for 9 years as a Correctional Services Chaplain at the Maplehurst Correctional Centre, and the Brampton Courthouse for 9 years.  He has been married to Wendy for 31 years. They have no children, but they have a dog,  Charlie who is 5 years old.  He is an avid reader and tries to walk or run at least once a day.

Danny thanked the Rotary Club of Brighton for stepping up and organizing the Kettle campaign in Brighton this past December.

Traditionally Brighton was handled by the Salvation Army in Trenton but they closed up and Danny doesn't know the circumstances but it created a void in the Brighton area.

The Brighton kettle campaign raised $14,550 in 2021. That is awesome. The Cobourg  and Port Hope area raised $148,000. The Northumberland community is very generous.

The Salvation Army has been in the area for 138 years, predominately in the Cobourg area. They are looking at how best to create a presence in Brighton.

Now the Salvation Army is looking at how to spend those funds to serve the Brighton Community without duplicating services. They are looking to partner or fill gaps where there is a need. A possible drop in centre to meet and listen to people. A space to rent or use periodically. However, during the pandemic it has been difficult to get out and meet people.

Some ideas they have been discussing internally include:
- once a week drop in centre
- coat for kids
- baby formula program
- hot meals once a week
- help bank where they help families with dental, prescription drugs, glasses, transportation, rent
- summer camp for kids

They want to give back, to provide a hand up, not a hand out.

Rotary can help by identifying needs, a space to use, possible partners.
