Global Grant Scholarships - District 7070

GLOBAL GRANT SCHOLARSHIPS – 2023  Dates (for the academic year 2023-24)
  •  FEBRUARY 28, 2023 - Last date for submission of complete applications to District 7070 Global Grant Scholarship Committee
  •  MARCH 18, 2023 -  Interview of selected candidates by District 7070 Scholarship Committee
BACKGROUND:  The Ambassadorial Scholarship Program, created by RI in 1947, became the Global Grant Scholarship Program in 2013.  More than 40,000 men and women from over 100 countries have  studied abroad under these programs.  Acknowledged as the world’s largest privately funded international scholarship program, today’s Global Grant Scholars are expected to be ambassadors for Rotary and Canada to their host countries.
Global Grant Scholarships are US$30,500  scholarships for postgraduate work in any of Rotary's Areas of Focus .
- Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
- Disease prevention and treatment
- Water and sanitation
- Maternal and child health
- Basic education and literacy
- Economic and community development
- Supporting the environment
There is no cost to sponsoring Rotary clubs other than time for selection and mentoring of candidates.  The funding is 50% from the Foundation’ World Fund and 50% District Designated Funds.  Scholarships are to cover rations and quarters, tuition, travel and language training, etc.,   excluding costs incurred prior to the award.
Global Grant scholars must have an interest in the goals of Rotary and be willing to participate in Rotary activities at home and abroad.  The scholarships instill the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self and develop leaders who can address the humanitarian needs of the world community.
What can Rotary Clubs do:     Identify and mentor candidates.  Candidates are often self selected as this group is highly motivated, intelligent and successful. Most often they research the Global Grant Scholarship program on-line and then contact a Rotary Club in their area of residence, work or study.  Clubs can also promote the scholarship and invite applications.  Key is to respond with basic information and begin to qualify the candidates and guide the application process to the District Scholarship Committee.

Stories
Gabriel's Story so far
R Emily introduced Gabriel as her temporary son. She is happy to have in as part of the family and he gets along well with Jack.

Gabriel is grateful to be here. (He has a birthday coming up soon - Oct 9).

He is youngest of three children. He has an older brother who is 23 and a sister who is 19.

His parents have a business supplying parts and repairs to trucks.

He is from a small city in Brazil of only about 105,000 people.

When he arrived in Canada he experienced some home sickness. But then made some friends and things are getting better. He missed his family and friends from Brazil initially. Everything is different here compared to Brazil.

With new friends and settling in he is loving it here.

School is very different. In Brazil he went to a much smaller private school. He says teachers at ENSS are better. At home school starts at 6:30am each day to 12:30pm. With some classes in afternoon a couple days. He said the subjects are very different and learn more here.

The hardest part for him now is language.

In Brazil, temperature seldom goes below 10 degrees C.

On his bucket list for Canada:

1. trip to Toronto
2. Halloween
3. Snow and make snow man and snow balls
4. Dog sledding and skiing

R Emily and Mark are taking him to Niagara Falls for a day during Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving also new to Gabriel.

R Daniel thanked Gabriel for sharing.
